Use Your Style as a Tool for Confidence

Your personal style is a more than an outfit or piece of clothing. It is taking your power back after an abusive relationship or being in a cult situation that decided your style for you.

After leaving the FLDS cult, I remember feeling overwhelmed by the endless options and didn't even know what I liked.  But over the past 10 years I have learned that personal style is about having fun, wearing what you feel confident in, and letting your style evolve with you, and the season you are in within your own life.

Here are a few ways you can start finding your personal style:

  1. Start Small: Begin by integrating small pieces that you love into your wardrobe. It could be a bold scarf, a pair of earrings, or a color you’ve always admired but never wore.

  2. Experiment: Don’t be afraid to try new styles or trends. Fashion is meant to be fun and exploratory. Use it as an opportunity to discover new aspects of your identity.

  3. Dress for Yourself: Remember that the most important person you’re dressing for is yourself. Choose outfits that make you feel good, regardless of what others might think.

  4. Embrace Your Journey: Your style doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s okay if your wardrobe is a work in progress, just like your healing journey. Embrace the process and allow your style to evolve as you do.

  5. Seek Inspiration: Follow fashion influencers who inspire you, especially those who share stories of empowerment and confidence. Seeing others embrace their style can be a powerful motivator.

It is important to remember:

Your style is far more than just clothing; it’s a means of self-expression, a tool for reclaiming identity, and a pathway to confidence. For women who have left abusive relationships or cults, embracing personal style can be an integral part of the healing process.

By choosing what to wear, you’re not just putting on clothes—you’re choosing to express your identity, assert your autonomy, and walk with confidence in the world.

Your style, in this sense, becomes a celebration of your resilience, strength, and newfound freedom.

Courage in what you wear and the stories you tell.
